Mary J Blige was born in the Bronx, NY on this day 1971. Her mother was a nurse and her father was an alcoholic and very abusive. Music was her escape. As a teenager she went to the mall a recorded a demo in karaoke booth. It took her over four years before she caught the eye and ear of Uptown Records CEO , Andre Harrell. She was signed to the label but was a backup singer until her 1992 debut was released. Mary Jane endured a horrible childhood but persevered and made in to the top. Mary Jane Blige is one of the great voices of her generation.
She has sold over 50 million albums and has won nine Grammy Awards.
