Derek Jeter Suffers Season Ending Injury

The New York Yankees not only lost Game 1 of the American League Championship Series to the Detroit Tigers 6-4 in 12 innings, they lost their captain and one of the most respected players in all of Major League Baseball: Derek Jeter. While ranging to his left to field a routine ground ball in the top of the 12th inning, Jeter stepped awkwardly on his left foot and stumbled to the ground.

Jeter stayed on the ground looking at his left leg as the Yankees manager Joe Girardi and the trainer raced to his aid. Thousands of fans in attendance fell silent as Jeter had to be helped off the field. After the game the official announcement came that Jeter fractured his ankle and would be out for the remainder of the postseason. Jeter had been the only player on the team hitting the ball for average in the postseason so their prospects of making it past this round and to the World Series looks pretty bleak.

The Yankees are a very resilient bunch, however, as seen in the very same game coming back to tie the score at 4 after being down 4-0. New York also lost their Hall-of-Fame closer Mariano Rivera for the season back in May when he tore his knee up shagging fly balls before a game in Kansas City. The Yanks were left for dead then and they still won the American League East division.

The Bronx Bombers can only hope their struggling superstar Alex Rodriguez will finally step up in this time of crisis. See a clip of the injury to Jeter as it happened below:
