The 2012 London Summer Olympics golden girl Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Douglas (pictured left, below) has been tapped by talk maven extraordinaire Oprah Winfrey (pictured) to appear on her OWN network’s “Next Chapter” show.
Douglas is the first African-American gymnast and the first woman of color in Olympic history
to become the individual all-around champion, and the firstAmerican gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics.
The 16-year-old has been heralded not only by President Barack Obama via phone call but her wins also set the Twitterverse on fire with kudos by A-list celebs, such as Lil Wayne, Octavia Spencer, Raven-Symoné, and Beyoncé.
Winfrey will have lots to discuss with the young Olympic dynamo, who has been making quite a few headlines with news that has nothing to do with her talent. Douglas has been criticized for the way in which she chose to wear her hair during the games. Unfortunately, many folks taking to Twitter to knock its coarseness rather than congratulate Douglas’ electrifying accomplishments. In addition, the media has focused on any and all issues Douglas’ parents have, which has incited a backlash of its own.
With hope, Oprah will focus on Douglas’ talent in her interview, which will be televised on Sunday, August 26 at 8:30 p.m., EST on the OWN network.
