Nearly 12-thousand Old School and New School fans packed the Gexa Energy Pavilion last night for the 1st Annual “Old School Summer Jam.”
As fans started to make their way to the lawn area with blankets and water in tow, you could tell they were ready to kick off the Memorial Weekend.
Kurtis Blow started off the 7-hour jam session and energized the crowd in the sweltering evening heat. The 52-year-old Rap Icon showed why he is still in demand worldwide. The Grammy-winning “Dazz Band” performed true to tradition dressed in full suits and just like back in the day, the musicians were hitting “on all fours.” They were so cool I didn’t even see them sweat. If it wasn’t hot enough The “Funky Divas”, Cindy, Maxine, Terry turned the heat up even higher dressed in all white and you couldn’t ignore they are still in excellent shape. En Vogue performed songs from a few legendary female singers who paved the way in the music industry with a tribute to the late Donna Summer, the Emotions and Tina Turner, they didn’t miss a note their voices are still strong as ever.
The evening quickly gave way to the night and Babyface was the first Superstar to appear in the Dallas sky last night. He brought the crowd to its feet and had his brother Kevon join him to sing medley of his songs and a 10-15 hits he wrote for other artists like: Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Boyz-II-Men and Tevin Campbell. Babyface brought back so many great memories… we all sang along. The place went nuts setting the stage for the always entertaining, amazing and ageless Charlie Wilson. Uncle Charlie can still hit those notes and always seems to pull out a few more each time I get to see him. He leaves the party goers totally breathless, a few needing oxygen or maybe a good nap.
With so many so called pop culture acts these days performing with tracks or even pre-recorded vocals the most unique aspect of Old School Concerts would be the live singing and live band performances. Get ready we have another concert on the horizon.
